Squadron 2 is New Mexico's only designated Senior
Squadron. The title indicates that the squadron comprises adult members
only. Squadrons which combine involvement in mission flights with separate
programs for adolescents are called composite squadrons. There are
ten composite squadrons in New Mexico, and two comprising cadets
exclusively. Although Squadron 2 has no formal cadet program, its pilots
log many hours in CAP cadet orientation flights and regularly tow gliders
in the cadet glider training and encampment programs.
The Squadron 2 roster for
January 2004 lists a membership of one hundred twenty-four. Of the more
than sixty licensed pilots on the list, fifty-two are Mission Pilots, authorized to
fly CAP aircraft during search and rescue and various other types of
flights assigned to CAP by various government agencies. Thirteen non-pilots
are Observers, members who have completed course work and satisfied
requirements to participate as crew in various mission flights. The
remaining group includes members in various phases of training or
satisfaction of CAP flight requirements.
During the periods between actual
missions, training, and proficiency flying, members work in a variety of administrative, maintenance, and
clerical roles for both the squadron and New Mexico Wing. The
organizational structure within which they work is patterned after the
basic structure of USAF Squadron and Wing deployments.
